The increasing number of digital tools and the transition to paperless systems with the cloud means that digital technologies have an ecological footprint that is more visible: in 2013, the electricity consumption of the 14 billion computers, games consoles, decoders, routers worldwide was equal to 616 TWh, in other words, higher than Germany’s energy consumption !
Green IT aims to reduce the ecological, economic, and social footprint of digital technologies. This means developing a coherent, universal method for reducing the difficulties faced in the digital technology field, during the entire lifecycle of each piece of technology and particularly at the different stages of production, use (energy consumption) and end of life (management/recovery of waste, pollution, depletion of non-renewable resources).
